Real ID: What You Need to Know
The Real ID Act establishes new security standards for state-issued identification cards, including driver’s licenses, to enhance national security. If you’re planning to travel domestically by air or enter certain federal facilities, having a Real ID-compliant card is crucial. This secure form of ID is marked with a star in the upper right corner, signifying it meets federal requirements.
To obtain a Real ID, you must provide proof of identity, Social Security Number, and two proofs of state residency. The application process involves an in-person visit to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, where you’ll submit your documents, complete the application, and have your photo taken.
Starting May 7, 2025, a Real ID-compliant card or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, will be required for domestic flights and accessing federal facilities. Don’t waitโensure you’re prepared by obtaining your Real ID before the deadline.
